Rats - rats can spread disease, e.g. salmonella and gastroenteritis by contaminating. They can also damage buildings by tunnelling in foundations or gnawing through wooden supports or doors. Gnawing of electric cables or water pipes can lead to fire or flood problems. Food contamination by droppings, urine or hairs is also possible. Any type of packaging or products and materials can be at risk from rats by chewing or contaminating.

Mice - like rats, mice can spread disease including gastroenteritis by contaminating food. Mice are incontinent and leave droppings and urine wherever they go.

Gnawing through cables, water pipes, food packing or textile materials etc, can all have damaging and costly consequences.

If rodents are a problem to you or your premises we will have a solution. Contact Active Pest Solutions.

Wasps - wasps can be a nuisance, and stings hurt. Many individuals suffer from an allergic reaction to wasp stings and which may require rapid medical treatment. We will eliminate wasp nests using the best insecticide products available. We can also provide electric fly and wasp killing units to help reduce wasp problems in the workplace.

Bees - Active Pest solutions can give advice and help where bees are a problem.

Ants - black garden ants are the main problem in Scotland. They can cause distress to individuals at home or in the work place and can infest, and therefore contaminate, some foods.

We can help prevent ants entering buildings by using insecticide treatments. The latest insecticide gel bait treatments can eliminate a whole ant colony. The gel is taken back to the nest by the worker ants and fed to the queen and the grubs.

Pharoes Ants - can occasionally cause problems in Scotland. APS would assess the whole extent of the problem and treat it with the latest baiting products.

Moles - If moles are a problem in a garden, on a farm, golf course or any other Sports or Recreation area, APS can help. Trapping is our preferred method of work. Other moles often move in to deserted mole runs. Active Pest solutions can set up a regular control program if required.

Grey Squirrels - these become a problem when they enter buildings. Their sharp teeth can easily widen small gaps in the soffit or eves of a roof. Once inside they may damage cables and pipes etc. They also create a lot of noise, as they move around at night. A female will often build a nest in an attic to rear 3-4 young. Squirrels can also cause a nuisance in gardens. We provide a Squirrel removal service and can proof the property against further incursions.

Bedbugs - these cause a great deal of irritation and distress. They feed on human blood leaving red bite marks on the skin. They can produce 4-5 new eggs daily if conditions allow. We can provide a comprehensive method of Bed Bug elimination which will involve some customer assistance. Insecticide treatments are then introduced..

Birds - we have a variety of methods to help prevent the problems created by birds. Bird netting and spiking systems (not sharp) prevent gulls or pigeons nesting and roosting on roofs or ledges etc. In some situations removal of nests or eggs can be undertaken. We also carry out bird proofing work to prevent smaller birds entering and nesting in and around your home or workplace. Birds are known to be responsible for introducing a variety of insect problems into buildings, including Australian Spider Beetles and Bird mites.

Flies - House flies in particular carry and transmit disease by landing on food, and depositing bacteria from rotting vegetation or animal droppings previously visited, or by their process of liquefying anything they eat. APS can supply electric fly killing units, or install fly screens over doors and windows in shops or restaurants.

Cluster Flies - these flies may attempt to winter inside almost any type of building. Therefore they are often found in roof spaces in large numbers during winter, or gathering at windows on warm spring or autumnal days. Insecticide sprays around window frames will help in their removal. Smoke canisters containing insecticide will eliminate them in roof spaces. Electric Fly Killing Machines are also very effective.

Fleas - cats, dogs, birds and even humans have fleas that will feed on their blood. Cat and dog fleas are currently very common. They prefer to feed from their natural host, but will jump onto and bite humans casing redness and itching. In some cases an allergic reaction to the bites may cause a more severe reaction which may require hospital treatment.

APS will treat infested areas with appropriate residual insecticides killing adults and larva.

Infested animals should be treated by a vet.

Cockroaches - different types of cockroaches can be found, even in Britain. The German and Oriental varieties are quite common in Scotland. Cockroaches carry and spread disease and can contaminate food. Most often a problem for the food production industry, a business reputation can be ruined if a problem goes unchecked.

Modern insecticidal gels and sprays specifically targeting cockroaches will eliminate the problem effectively.

Moths - common clothes moth and case bearing clothes moths are a pest in homes and in the textile industry. Light brown or goldish looking, clothes moths can be seen running on carpets or hiding in clothes drawers and cupboards. It is their larvae that cause the damage to garments, carpets or furniture as the protein found in natural fibres is utilised in their growth and development process.

APS will identify the source of the problem then treat it by applying residual insecticides to affected areas, concentrating on any potential hiding places.

Beetles - there are many different types of beetle. Often beetles, including some of the relatively large dark coloured ground beetles are recognised as a nuisance only. Others e.g. Larder Beetles, may indicate food spillage or poor hygiene measures. Australian Spider Beetles can attack food sources, or Carpet beetles can damage fabrics. Clothes or carpets may be attacked.

APS will identify the type of beetle involved, find it’s source, and then treat the area using the most appropriate control measures.

Mites - There are a number of different types of mite. Some carry disease, some bite and others can cause respiratory problems. Heat and humidity are often a factor when mites are a problem. Drying the environment and the surrounding atmosphere combined with cleaning or disposal of infested products can help to eradicate mites, in conjunction with utilising insecticide treatments.

Spiders - spiders are not recognised as a public health pest. The do however cause fear and distress in some phobic people. Insecticide treatments will help prevent spiders entering buildings. Regular vacuuming of webs will also help as it removes a spider’s food source.

Silverfish - not recognised as a public health pest. They can however cause fear and distress in some people. They are most often spotted at night in kitchens or bathrooms where the warm temperatures and humid conditions create ideal living conditions. Insecticide treatments to cracks and crevices around sinks or showers will help reduce the problem.
